Toronto

Hi everyone! I’m excited to say that I’ll be moving back to Toronto in July. Montreal will always be my hometown and I’ll miss my friends and musical misfits here, but I’ve always looked forward to traveling to T.O. during the last 2 years, so I’m moving my homebase back there.

A quick shout-out to the Montreal musicians who have inspired me over the last 2 years:

The Barr Brothers
Daniel Isaiah
Mark Berube and the Patriotic Few
Amanda Mabro (now based in Toronto!)
Miss Sugarpuss
Li’l Andy
Tommy Youngsteen
Tim Fletcher and Greg Paquet
Ideal Lovers (r.i.p)
Eric Harding (my old jazz piano teacher)
Leif Vollebekk
David Martel
The Darlington String Quartet
and many more!

It’s been 4 years (wow!) since I’ve lived in Toronto, though sometimes it feels like I’ve never left. Here’s to the next chapter!

Love,
Mike

Ezra Soiferman’s “Photeo”

My good friend Ezra Soiferman, who I’ve collaborated with over the past 10 years, was inspired to put my song “Do You Feel The World?” to a collage of his art photos he’s taken in recent years. Check out the result here:

CBC Concert on Demand

Hello all, here to tell you that the concert I recorded a few weeks ago with the Darlington String Quartet for CBC is now up online for everyone to listen to on CBC’s Concerts On Demand website. Check it out to hear fresh arrangements of songs from Do You Feel The World? You can listen here.

Big Toronto Show

I’m thrilled thrilled and in suspense for my next Toronto show, coming up on Thursday May 5th. At the Drake Hotel, with Darrelle London on the bill. I’ll be joined by a band and string section and some surprise guests. The show starts at 8 pm sharp. I hope to see all of you there! xo, Mike.

New energy

I feel so energized from my performance with a string quartet a few days ago in Montreal. The Darlington String Quartet and I taped a handful of songs for CBC Radio, and the performances will be broadcast nation-wide sometime in late-May/early-June. I will let you all know. In the meantime, here are a couple of photos from the show. The quartet is, left to right: John Corban on violin, Carissa Klopoushak on violin, Jennifer Thiessen on viola, and Kristina Koropecki on cello.

Routes Montreal

The string arrangements are progressing nicely for the CBC performance next week. I’m lucky to be working with Andy Creeggan on this! Here’s a nice promo video made by George Allister of the Segal Centre.

Two cool Toronto shows in May

Hey winterbirds,

I’m excited for 2 Toronto shows coming up in the first week of May. Come out one and all. The first is a show at the Drake Hotel, a venue I haven’t played yet. It’s with Darrelle London, who is a favorite of mine. Check her out. Her new album will have some songs produced by Chantal Kreviazuk. And this will be my first Toronto show with a band in a long time. The Drake show is on May 5th. The second show is a Bob Dylan tribute at Hugh’s Room. Other artists playing their favorite Dylan songs are Treasa Levasseur, Ariana Gillis, Lindi Ortega and a bunch of others. That’s May 7th. Like I said, come out one and all. Come one and all… however the saying goes. xo, Mike.

Halifax Session, Part 3

Check out “Do You Feel The World?” from the Halifax Session with Andy Creeggan. Thanks to Mat Dunlap for the camera work and Dave Ewenson for sound.

ME Unreleased #2: “Radio Jockey Witness Protection Program Dance” (live from the Yellow Door Coffeehouse, 2002)

Hi all,

Check out this old live classic of mine, a regular song in my sets around 2001-2002. This recording is from a concert at the Yellow Door Coffeehouse, one of the first venues where I played my original songs. Dig it. xo, Mike.

ME Unreleased #1: “Grandpa Was A Baptist”

I’m excited to start a new little series for you called ME UNRELEASED. Over the years I’ve recorded a lot of songs that haven’t been released, either demos of songs that ended up on my albums but in drastically different forms, or songs that never made it onto albums, or live shows, or collaborations with other musicians. I’d like to start sharing these with you. So here’s the first installment. I hope you enjoy.

ME UNRELEASED #1: “Grandpa Was A Baptist”
This is a demo of a song that never made it onto I’LL BRING THE STEREO but was written around the same time as the other songs. In the summer of 2003 I went up to my family’s country house in the Laurentians with Andy Creeggan and he recorded a bunch of my songs with just me and the piano, and occasionally he’d join me on vocals. This is one of those cases. We really dug it, and he helped me to construct the song a bit. This week was when we really got to spend quality time just the two of us and we really bonded. Have a listen below.
